Mindset Matters: Finding Power in the Recovery Journey

At first, I struggled to believe what my therapist often said: “Pain is inevitable, but suffering is a choice.” I felt surrounded by loss, trying to navigate a life that seemed so limited. How could I not feel miserable?

But over time, I recognized how much the loss of control was affecting me. While I couldn’t change my brain’s pace of healing or avoid necessary appointments, I could reclaim my sense of agency by shifting my perspective.

Here’s how I began to take small but meaningful steps:

  • Learning from high-performance coaches: I sought inspiration and practical strategies for building resilience.

  • Engaging in yoga therapy: Originally intended to address physical injuries, it profoundly impacted my mental outlook.

  • Focusing on growth-oriented media: I limited my exposure to negativity, choosing books, podcasts, and shows centered around a growth mindset mentality.

  • Practicing daily affirmations: Simple, direct statements said with intentionality helped reframe my thoughts.

  • Setting boundaries: Protecting my time and energy allowed me to focus on what truly mattered.

  • Celebrating tiny wins: Gratitude for small victories helped me shift my attention from setbacks to progress.

As I embraced these conscious practices, my focus began to change. Instead of fixating on what I couldn’t control or how long recovery was taking, I directed my energy toward what I could do. And in that shift, I found a profound sense of growth and healing.

Takeaway:

Pain doesn’t have to lead to suffering. While PPCS recovery is far from easy, cultivating a mindset that prioritizes growth, gratitude, and self-compassion can help transform the journey.
